Apple today announced an update to its MacBook Pro range of professional laptops. The new MacBook Pro laptops almost all come with Apple's super sharp Retina Display, although surprisingly there remains one, older 13in model without a Retina Display. Here we round up the features, specification, UK release data and price of Apple's new MacBook Pro laptops. The new MacBook Pro laptops are available to buy in the UK today.
New MacBook Pro specifications
The new MacBook Pro laptops come with Intel Haswell processors. Each has a Haswell CPU, with Intel's onboard Iris or Iris Pro graphics, apart from the top-of-the-range MacBook Pro which also boasts a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics card with 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory. But these are no ordinary Haswell processors anyway, according to Intel and Apple. These are Crystalwell chips. Crystalwell is the name for a superior subset of Haswell chips. 'Crystalwell' itself is the codename of the L4 cache (eDRAM) featured in the Iris Pro-enabled Haswell CPUs. It's responsible for increased performance utilising less power (according to Intel).
So straight out of the box the new MacBook Pro laptops should be great performers. Each is partnered with a decent chunk of RAM, too. Most have 8GB RAM, but the cheapest two models - including the non-Retina remaining runt of the litter - come with only 4GB, and the top-of-the range MacBook Pro has a whopping 16GB RAM. With the exception of that sad, remaining, ugly duckling MacBook Pro, all of the range now comes with an SSD in place of a hard drive. This should improve performance in real-world situations. Storage ranges from 128GB up to 512GB.

New MacBook Pro features
First up we have to mention the display resolution. All of the new MacBook Pro laptops have Retina displays. We find a 2560x1600 resolution on the 13in MacBook Pro and an equally impressive 2880x1800 resolution on the 15in MacBook Pro. That means stunning pixel density ratings of 232ppi for the 13in model and 226ppi for the 15in. This is the sort of clarity and sharpness you would expect from a mid-level smartphone or tablet, on a big-screen laptop. (See also: Apple iPad mini Retina price in the UK.)
We've discussed the processors and memory that should push performance, and the flash-based storage that will also add a turn of speed. Apple also claims that the new MacBook Pro laptops have longer battery life than their predecessors. Apple claims 8- or 9 hours of use away from the mains, for all the MacBook Pro laptops, as well as 30 days on standby. We can't wait to try that out (a month-long battery life test requires a certain amount of vigilance)! (See also: iPad Air 5th generation release date, specs and new features.)
There are some great software features added free to your new MacBook Pro, too. The new MacBook Pro laptops come with OS X Mavericks, Apple's latest desktop operating system. They also have the iLife creativity and iWork productivity suites included as standard.
The other major new feature is 802.11ac wireless connectivity, which in the right circumstances will mean faster wireless broadband at the end point. There's also Thunderbolt 2 ports which Apple claims will make wired connectivity faster, each new MacBook Pro gets two of those. There's a Facetime HD webcam, dual built-in microphones and stereo speakers, as well as multitouch trackpad and backlit keyboard (standard Apple). (See also: OS X Mavericks is free to download.)
